In recent years, and certainly thanks to the COVID-19 lockdown and various changes in working habits, the ‘gig economy’ has become more and more popular as a concept for how people want to work. However, although it can offer a number of benefits, it’s not always an easy way to earn money. Read on to find out more about how to be successful in the gig economy to help you earn a relatively steady income and support yourself financially.
What Is The Gig Economy?
Before we can talk about how to be successful in the gig economy, it’s important to know what it is so that you can decide whether or not it’s the right option for you.
In essence, a gig economy is one in which people work on a short-term contract or freelance basis rather than being fully employed. The ‘gigs’ themselves can be anything, and you don’t have to specialize, but can instead do all kinds of different tasks, depending on what needs to be done.
Now you have a better idea of what the gig economy is, here are some tips to help you be as successful as possible.
Choose The Right Gig
We mentioned above how you can do all kinds of different jobs when you are a gig worker, and you don’t have to stick to just one thing. However, whether you do decide that this is the right strategy for you or you feel that choosing just one thing would work better, you’ll need to make sure you choose the right gig.
When you’re thinking about what gig would be best for you, think about your strengths and what you enjoy doing. Think about the tools and equipment you already have and how qualified or experienced you are. You might choose to be a freelance writer, a website designer, a dog walker, a painter and decorator, or perhaps a driver, which is something that expert Zarif Haque suggests is the most rewarding type of gig work you can find.
Have A Strong Work Ethic
When you are a gig worker, you’ll have a lot of freedom. You can choose where and when you work, and you’ll be able to take time off whenever you need or want to. This is one of the biggest advantages of this type of work.
However, if you don’t have a strong work ethic, you might find that you take more time off than you spend working, and that will have a direct impact on how successful you are. Gig workers don’t get paid when they’re not working (which is one of the major downsides), so the more time you take off, the less you’ll earn and the less successful you’ll be.
Build Your Personal Brand
When you are working in the gig economy, your personal brand is crucial – it’s really your biggest asset, and it’s what you can use to market yourself and get more work. Ideally, you’ll need to have the next job lined up before the current one has finished to ensure you have a regular and relatively stable (although in the gig economy, this is rare) income.
To build your personal brand, you’ll need a website that explains who you are and what you do, and that allows people to get in touch with you easily. You’ll also need various social media profiles. The platform or platforms you choose to create profiles on will depend on who your target market is and what you do, so make sure you research this first.
