Every business has a production line of some kind. Even if you’re creating digital content, you’re still taking it from the initial design stages to the finished project someone can pay to download; it’s a production line in all but name.
Similarly, every production line has something holding it back. Disruptions occur in business on a daily basis, but if they’re left without intervention for too long, they can start to harm the profit margins.
That’s when you need to start investigating. What’s holding up your production line? It’s usually one of these three problems in play.
Equipment Downtime
Downtime is a hazard across all industries. It’s often something you have to plan, but it also occurs suddenly and unexpectedly and brings full operations to a halt. These are the hours when running a business becomes very expensive.
You lose out on viable profit-making time, which impacts your ability to pay your workers, and if you’ve got clients using the system, you have to pay back their time.
Downtime can be incredibly troublesome in even the biggest of businesses, so it can be killer when you’re a new operation. To avoid it, make sure you’re scheduling maintenance at routine hours and you don’t ignore employee calls for machines to shut down.
Waste Buildups
A waste buildup can cause all kinds of harm – not just to your machinery and the speed at which it can work, but your employees as well. Dust in the air can cause eye and lung issues, to name a couple, and if there’s a strong output on the floor, you’ll be dealing with trip hazards all round.
That’s where equipment like a reverse pulse dust extractor comes in. If you can wick the dust straight out of the air before it is allowed to settle into residue, and you provide PPE for any employees on the production floor, these buildups are never going to occur in the first place.
Investing in extra safety equipment will make you ten times the ROI in the end – you just need to have the foresight to get the right stuff installed before you start producing.
Accidents and Injuries
Accidents and injuries can occur in even the safest of environments, and usually they’re nothing too much to worry about. A bruise here, a cut there – small things that can be logged in an accident book and swiftly dealt with.
However, some accidents cause serious injuries that require an employee to stay off work for months on end. If it comes to this, you could have a lawsuit on your hands, especially if you don’t fulfil your end of the bargain in regards to worker compensation.
Prevent this with the two tips above. You can take these a step further and ensure your staff are properly trained as well. Any supervisor assigned to the line needs to have both company profit and employee welfare in mind.
Small business owner? Don’t let your production line become a production failure.
